In early 2022, Mohammed’s mother told him she could not afford to send him and his siblings to school, and asked him to stay home. Wanting to support his family, he left with friends to look for work in Kampala.

The work never came, and they ended up on the streets. Mohammed had to fend for himself in harsh conditions, exposed to exploitation, substance abuse, and a lack of basic necessities.

A volunteer with Mtaani Foundation noticed him and helped him off the streets. He was taken to MLISADA, where counselling and rehabilitation helped him work through the trauma.

A team from Mtaani Foundation then helped Mohammed return to Nebbi, where he was joyfully reunited with his family, his single mother, his grandmother, and his siblings.
